Constantin Film is developing a modern-day, action/thriller series inspired by the classic Alexandre Dumas novel The Count of Monte Cristo, to be headlined by Screen Actors Guild Award winning actor and producer Jack Huston.
Huston (Fargo, Boardwalk Empire, The Irishman) will star in the returning series as well as write and executive produce along with his partners Ian Duncan and Simon Boyes.
Set in Asia and the US, and weaving an intricate story of betrayal, romance and revenge, playing out on a canvas that stretches the globe, Nicolas Cristo (Huston), a man broken, betrayed and locked away for over a decade, will fight to bring justice to a world even more cruel and corrupt than the one that was taken from him.
“It has long been a dream of ours to take what we consider to be one of the great works of literature and present it to a modern audience in a unique and compelling way. We couldn’t be more excited to have partnered with Constantin, Stephen, and Tea Shop to reimagine this incredible story and bring it to life.” – Jack Huston, Ian Duncan and Simon Boyes
Multi-hyphenate Stephen Fung (Wu Assassins, Into The Badlands, House of Fury) will direct and executive produce.
“I am thrilled to board this journey with Jack, Ian, Simon and Constantin. I believe we share the same passion and excitement to reimagine this classic tale of revenge and redemption.“ – Stephen Fung.
Executive Producers for Constantin Film are Oliver Berben and Robert Kulzer; overseeing the project for the company is Constantin EVP of TV Brandon Zimon, along with creative executives Colin Scully and Alex Westmore. James Harris of Tea Shop Productions is producing.
“Jack, Ian and Simon have taken one the most beloved novels of all time, spun it on its head and added equal doses of Succession, Old Boy and John Wick to create a high octane, epic East/West thriller.” – Robert Kulzer
The Dumas-inspired project joins adaptations of other iconic novels on Constantin’s drama slate including Peter Høeg’s Smilla’s Sense and Snow and We children from Bahnhof Zoo.
The studio is expected to take the project out shortly to premium cable and streamers.
Huston is represented by UTA, Untitled, Narrative and Gang, Tyre, Ramer, Brown & Passman. Boyes is represented by ICM and 3 Arts Entertainment. Duncan is represented by The Artists Partnership. Fung is represented by Gersh, Philip Button’s Seven XV Ventures, and Patrick Knapp from Goodman Genow. Nick Hanks, Senior EVP Business & Legal Affairs and Operations negotiated the deals on behalf of Constantin along with Sarah Santos of Media Strategies International.
